#blacklivesmatter means we teachers have some learning to do…

The #blacklivesmatter movement has (I hope) got us all thinking about how to be anti-racist – how to be part of the solution not part of the problem.

However, I think we are going to find that being anti-racist is much broader than simply anti-black-and-brown-people racism – being anti-racist means being anti-oppression, and in this short post I’m going to try to explain why I think we classroom teachers (I talk in particular about language teaching because that’s my profession, but my point applies to all teaching) have some learning to do. Let me start with something surprising:

As language teachers:

  • I don’t think we should be telling our students HOW to speak – I don’t think we should be judging THEIR utterances by OUR “native-speaker” standards. We should be helping them develop ideas about THEIR OWN standards, and helping them work towards THOSE standards, not our own.
  • And I don’t think we should be telling them WHAT to say – I think we should be helping them to find THEIR OWN voices, to say what THEY want to say, not what WE want them to say.

Yes, as educators we have a role: we can suggest topics and roads of enquiry, and prod them with questions to encourage deeper thought.

オンライン授業を早めに作成する方法

日本は(やっと)緊急事態宣言を出して、臨時休暇などに入っている学校は少なくないため、多くの先生は(超)急いでオンラインの授業の仕組みを考え出している。早めに対応が出来るように、この方法を最初の一歩として使ってみれば?

便利ですから、授業のLINEグループを作ったことがある講師は結構いると思います。基本として、LINEの代わりにグーグルクラスルームを第一のコミュニティツールとして使って、そちから生徒たちにはビデオチャットの授業、課題などのお知らせをする。

(ビデオチャットといえば、Zoomは代表的で便利ですが、様々なセキュリティやプライバシーの問題が明らかになってきて、下にこの問題について少し話します)

追加2020-04-10:
最低限に簡単化出来ることを気がついた:
必要なのは:
1.皆学生が入っている、簡単にメッセージやリンクを投稿出来るアプリのクラスグループ。グーグルクラスルームは適切(特に、課題とかシェアが出来る機能充実)ですが、本当は何でもいいです:LINEグループでも十分。
2.グループで話せるアプリ。先生によって、ビデオなくてもいいなら声だけでもいいかもしれない、そうであれば更に選択の幅は広がる。

セットアップのやり方

1. 個人のグーグルアカウントからグーグルクラスルームを開く:

How to set up to teach online in a hurry

Japan (finally) declaring a state of emergency over Covid-19 means teachers and schools are all scrambling to come with ways to teach online. After a (online!) meeting yesterday I came away with what I think is a pretty good fast-starter arrangement for online teaching, so this post is to give you what I know so far, so you’ve got something to build on.

This method (hack?) uses google classroom as the primary method of communicating with your students to tell them about video classes, set assignments etc, and pretty much any audio/video chat application for doing the actual lessons.

(Zoom is popular, and has a great “breakout rooms” feature, tho it does have well-documented security issues – see my short discussion below)

UPDATE 2020-04-10: I realized it’s possible to simplify this even further:
You need:
1. A method of sharing links and short messages with your students: Google Classroom might be good (especially if you want to set assignments, share documents etc) but to get online teaching started all you really need is a group for each of your classes in ANY messaging app: once you have them all in one place, you’ll be able to arrange meeting etc to further organize.
2. A method of talking live with your students: any group talk-to-each-other app, some teachers may even feel that no video just audio will work, which will broaden the possibilities

How to:

1. open up google classroom from your google (personal) account

Ok, with that out of the way, here are my layman thoughts:

A blog post (link below) by another layman with an internet connection (a Japanese national living in Australia) suggests a hypothesis that the differences in speed of spread and severity of infection between different regions of the world may be due to BCG vaccination programs, with the important distinction that not all BCG vaccinations are the same, and that the so-called “Japan Strain” (an older strain, used in Japan and several other countries, particularly in Asia) may be more effective in providing resistance to the Covid-19 virus (this would explain why some countries with a BCG program are experiencing rapid spread: they use other strains that do not provide the same resistance).

Sharing my grief on social media: the shares, and some reflection

In my response to my friend’s death I somehow ended up sharing my grief on social media (which is very not usually something I would do). I discuss this in the final section of this post, but first, the posts themselves, culled from my social media for that week:

When I’m tense (eye-man?) I always compensate by getting ready absurdly early (and by making puns with my name…). Just in case there’s a problem (with my shoelaces??). So here I am, in my genkan, all ready to go, in the shirt and shoes wonderwife helped me buy on Friday, fully an hour before Owen is due to pick me up….
(Barely able to see the screen thru snot and tears….).
My friend would say “Do what you need to do, dude”.
I wonder how long I’ll be hearing his voice in my head?

Last night the world lost a fucking fireball….

Last night the world lost a fucking fireball of fun, whose wellspring of love and compassion was apparently bottomless (I never found the bottom: he always had more to give).

And I lost one of the best friends I ever had.

He was someone I could call at any time of day or night – he was always happy to hear from me. There were times when we talked nearly every day.

He supported me in the nutty stuff I try to do: teaching or writing or drawing or even just ranting about the state of the world. He’d always say “Your shit’s pretty cool dude”.

He also recognized my areas of fumbling inadequacy and pushed me to overcome them:

He pushed me to overcome my fear and really learn to surf. I’m still not the greatest surfer, but I think he’d be proud of who I am now out in the water.

And his dating advice and encouragement helped push me out of the shell I like to hide in: it’s not much of an exaggeration to say that without him I might never have gotten married….

He was also big enough to tell me when I fucked up, and if I fucked up with him, magnanimous enough to forgive me.

He will be sorely, painfully, viscerally missed by a great many people, and I feel proud and blessed and humbly grateful to count myself among them.

I hope he found my friendship even slightly as helpful as I found his. I’ll always wish I could have done more.

Rest easy now, my brother-from-a-different-mother…..

Pretty sure the surf must be firing where you are, my friend, so remember what you always told me: gotta want it to win it dude, so go hard, point it down, and get some… Enjoy your eternity of perfect waves, my friend, you, more than anyone, have earned it….
This is how I will remember him….
